I hope everyone had a well-deserved break during the holiday season. While 2009 was a very tough year for NRMA, we also managed to achieve some wonderful wins for our Members.
In December, after months of lobbying by NRMA, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) opposed Caltex's acquisition of Mobil service stations.
The ACCC was right to oppose Caltex's proposal, which we believe would have resulted in less competition. NRMA is now calling on the ACCC to request stronger powers through the Trade Practices Act to effectively monitor movements in the weekly price cycle.
Also in December the NSW Government announced a policy shift that will give many families with teenagers a break. From December 19, one hour of driving tuition by a professional instructor will count for three hours in the learner driver logbook. This decision offers a happy medium between ensuring learners get the broadest training possible and providing some relief to parents.
Finally, exciting news for Members planning to attend Rugby World Cup 2011, New Zealand. NRMA-owned Adventure World Travel has been appointed as an Official Travel Agent for Rugby World Cup 2011. Adventure World will offer packages including travel arrangements and games tickets.
This global sporting event is expected to attract more than 1.5 million visitors to New Zealand and is the world's third largest sporting event. Members can register by February 12 to get access to the games tickets and NRMA Member early-bird special pricing. People can register interest by visiting www.adventureworld.com.au/nrma and following the Rugby World Cup 2011 link.
