The service provides free local transport for residents and visitors alike and aims to minimise private vehicle usage within the Manly Local Government Area and thereby reduce the environmental pollution attributable to transport snarls.
Local Manly single mother of three, Melissa Mills was the lucky 1 millionth passenger of the Hop, Skip & Jump bus service, receiving a $500 Coles Group & Myer Gift Card from NRMA.
NRMA Director, Geoff Toovey presented Melissa with the gift card at a presentation at Manly Town Hall in July. Melissa uses the 'Hop Skip and Jump Bus' every week day to take her children to school and was delighted when sprung with the surprise. "It's a wonderful bus service because it's so community based. I always feel comfortable and the drivers are so friendly - my kids know them all by name," said Melissa. Mr Toovey said the milestone was well worth celebrating. "It's a real credit to Council and everyone involved that the one millionth passenger ride has come about so quickly," he said.
"NRMA partnered with Manly Council in this project because the bus service runs on alternative fuel which is good for the environment, reduces congestion in the Manly CBD by taking cars off the road and provides more mobility options for our Members".
The Hop, Skip & Jump Bus runs on biodiesel fuel, which reduces exhaust emissions of carbon monoxide by approximately 50 per cent and carbon dioxide by 78 per cent because the carbon in biodiesel emissions is recycled from carbon that was already in the atmosphere, rather than being new carbon from petroleum that was sequestered in the earth's crust.
