In October and November, we see all the mothers and calves coming down the coast.

This is what this whole migration is about with whales leaving the cold Antarctic waters where all their food is, to move north to warmer waters to give birth and to mate. We estimate that the whale population grows by about 10% each year.

In 2018 the total number of whales swimming past Sydney is estimated to be about 30.000 which means about 3000 newborn calves will make their way south past Sydney over the next 2 months or so.

Mothers and calves are usually the last whales we see swimming past the coast as they are travelling much slower than other adult whales.

It’s a great time of the season as mothers and calves are usually very close to the coast so we don’t have to spend too much time to find them.

Calves can also be extremely curious coming right up to the boats inspecting their new visitors or learn a few tricks from their mothers jumping out of the water for two hours non-stop. You would be amazed how much energy they seem to have, just like human toddlers.
