When you hear the word 'mugging' the most positive of thoughts don't seem to spring to mind - unless you're going whale watching, in which case you'd want nothing more than to get mugged - by a whale.

Imagine a whale sidling up to your boat, rolling over and looking you straight in the eye, or being so close that you feel as though you could virtually reach out and touch them - this is known as a 'mugging' - a general term used to describe a friendly or inquisitive whale that approaches a vessel and swims around it.

Using the east coast of Australia as a migration corridor between their breeding grounds in northeast Queensland and their feeding grounds in the Southern Ocean, the season of migration typically lasts from April until November, as they head north in June and July, choosing to head south in the spring.

Returning south with their newborn calves by their sides, whales will tend to swim slower and closer to the surface so that the calves can keep up. Intelligence and curiosity are on display as the newborn and fully grown whales approach vessels and stay close, interacting with the people on board for significant periods of time.

What's more, while the whales are within 100 metres of the boat, the ship's captain is unable move the boat until the whale has moved away - meaning you're on whale time, not your own with some whales remaining with a boat for a few minutes, while others have been known to stay for an hour or so.

During a 'mugging' you'll catch them swimming alongside and even underneath a boat - checking it out.  If you're lucky, you might encounter a 'spy-hop', which is when a whale slowly lifts its head out of the water. With its eyes above the waterline, the whales are able to see what's happening above the surface, checking out the scene around them. Occasionally, a female humpback will mug a boat in an effort to avoid an unwanted suitor, using the boat as a shield between her and a persistent male.
