Frequently asked questions

Travel insurance provides cover when travelling for unforeseen events such as injuries, illness or cancellations. Some of the most popular policy benefits include:

  • Travel delay
  • Loss or damage to luggage and personal effects
  • Cancellation and amendment fees
  • Overseas medical and hospital expenses
  • Additional expenses
  • Rental car insurance excess
  • Personal liability
  • And much more including COVID-19 benefits
Check the PDS for details.

The price of travel insurance depends on various factors including:

  • Age
  • Travel destination
  • Trip duration
  • Any pre-existing medical conditions
  • Cover level
  • Activities planned
  • Any additional cover

Ultimately, the cost of travel insurance comes down to the level of risk to the insurer, so the higher risk you pose, the more you pay for travel insurance.

If you’re planning a holiday that is more adventurous or includes high-risk activities such as scuba diving or rock climbing, then you may also face a premium to cover these activities. The same applies for cruise trips, any expensive valuable items you bring with you or if you want to include rental car insurance.

If you’re looking for cheap travel insurance, then you can consider travelling to less risky parts of the world where healthcare is more affordable or the risk of theft or illness is lower. However, keep in mind that cheap travel insurance isn’t always the best policy so take the time to create a quote and compare prices to suit the trip and your holiday requirements.

As an NRMA member, you will receive up to 5% discount off your travel insurance policy for domestic and international travel.
Depending on your travel plans, this will determine which type of trip insurance you require. If you know that you are only going on one holiday for the year, to one destination, then it’s likely that single trip travel insurance will cover all your needs. If however, you have planned multiple holidays for the year or are going to be travelling in multiple countries, a multi trip travel insurance policy might be better and cheaper.

To get the 5% member discount, the new NRMA Travel Insurance Policy must be started, completed and paid in full online.
