Newcomer Chinese brand Geely has announced its first model in Australia – the EX5 mid-size electric SUV – will start at just $40,990 before on-road costs.
This figure massively undercuts industry expectations, and Geely’s for that matter, the brand only last month saying it expected the two EX5 trims to retail locally in the $49,000-55,000 range.
Originally set to compete on price with the likes of the Hyundai Kona EV ($54,000) and Kia EV5 ($56,770 drive-away), the EX5 now parallels (and even undercuts) some of the cheapest electric SUVs in our market, including the Leapmotor C10 ($45,888) and the BYD Atto 3 ($39,990).

Further to the price cuts, Geely Australia has confirmed extensive factory backing for its debut model, including a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty, eight-year/unlimited-kilometre high voltage battery warranty, and up to seven years of roadside assistance.
These are supported with an introductory offer of three years’ servicing, a one-year public charging subscription, a home charger, and premium paint – all complimentary until the end of April.
Both trims of the Geely EX5 have a 60kWh battery pack, the front-wheel drive motor producing 160kW/320Nm. Approximate range is 410-430km depending on spec.
The EX5 also has vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities, with 100kW DC charging and an impressive suite of standard tech. To date, it has not been ANCAP tested.
