BYD
BYD Atto 3
After years of planning and supply chain issues, BYD finally entered the Australian electric car market in 2022 with the Atto 3 compact electric SUV – then claiming the title of ‘Australia’s cheapest electric car’.
The small SUV sets its sights on rival Chinese brand MG’s ZS EV, offering an near-identical price tag and competitive specifications, battery options and the addition of vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities (meaning it can send power from its battery to run something external to the vehicle).
In 2024, BYD dropped its price by several thousand dollars, and also gave it a design refresh. Apple Carplay has been added, as well as a larger infotainment screen. Notably, BYD has done away with the "Build Your Dream" lettering on the rear end, a move that will no doubt please the majority of buyers.

The seven-seat LDV Mifa 9 people mover sets a few records for the Australian new-car market. It's the most expensive Chinese-built car ever offered here, and the first electric people mover available from an Asian manufacturer.
A respectable driving range, generous standard tech and safety, and decent torque output should make the LDV Mifa 9 a good candidate for large families wanting zero-tailpipe-emission commutes and weekends away.

Lexus
Lexus UX300e
Lexus’ parent company, Toyota, has steered clear of releasing a battery electric vehicle under its own badge so far, instead deciding to test the waters of the luxury EV SUV space with the Lexus UX300e.
In 2023, the UX300e received a big boost to its battery capacity and driving range while only seeing a modest cost increase. With the model's luxury and styling, a price to match and exceptional warranty, it might just be the dark horse of suburban electric SUVs.
Model | Starting Price | Battery size | Driving range | Power and torque | Battery warranty | Body style | |

Mazda
Mazda MX-30
Mazda was somewhat late to the EV game when they introduced their MX-30.
A comparably high price tag for its battery capacity, driving range and performance means the MX-30 has to make up the difference with styling, safety and tech. The MX-30 Electric is probably best suited to city-dwellers looking for a stylish metropolitan run-around
Model | Starting Price | Battery size | Driving range | Power and torque | Battery warranty | Body style | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Mazda MX-30 E35 Astina | $66,410 | 35.5kWh | 200km | 107kW and 271Nm | Eight years/160,000km | SUV |
Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz EQA
The smallest of three in Mercedes-Benz’s entry-level EV line-up, the EQA small SUV can be had in two variants.
Both single-motor, front-wheel drive EQA 250 and dual-motor, four-wheel drive EQA 350 come in with respectable price tags considering they’re fully-electric cars wearing the Silver Arrow.
Model | Starting Price | Battery size | Driving range | Power and torque | Battery warranty | Body style | |

$96,900 | 66.5kWh | 400km | 215kW and 520Nm | Eight years/160,000km | SUV |
Mercedes-Benz EQB
A step up in price and size from the EQA (however a step backwards for performance) the EQB sits in the middle of Mercedes-Benz’s EQ range.
Using the same capacity battery and almost identical outputs as the EQA in a larger, seven-seat vehicle means driving range and acceleration in the EQB are sacrificed for size and space.
Model | Starting Price | Battery size | Driving range | Power and torque | Battery warranty | Body style | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Mercedes-Benz EQB 250 | $87,800 | 66.5kWh | 371km | 140kW and 385Nm | Eight years/160,000km | SUV | |

Mercedes-Benz EQC
Topping the EQ range is the Mercedes-Benz EQC. The first electric SUV released by the brand – and if the rumour mill is correct, the first to be axed sometime in 2023 – brings the biggest battery and output for the EQ SUV range.
Available in two trims, separated by a sunroof, wheels and a few other luxuries, the EQC comes with a single (but sizeable) battery capacity and a dual-motor, all-wheel drive layout.

Mercedes-Benz EQE
Built as an electric option for buyers wanting an E-Class-like footprint, the Mercedes-Benz EQE will be available in three variants, closed out by a sporty AMG range-topper.
Rear- and all-wheel drive, single- and dual-motor layouts and an $80k variance from entry- to top-level trim should mean the EQE has something to offer a wide array of buyers. Like the EQS, an SUV variant of the EQE is also planned for Australia later in 2023.
Note: The EQE’s driving ranges stated below are calculated on the out-of-date NEDC standard, meaning real-world range is likely to be substantially less than stated.
Model | Starting Price | Battery size | Driving range | Power and torque | Battery warranty | Body style | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 4matic
The 2023 EQS 450 4MATIC version of Mercedes-Benz's electric limousine joins the AMG-tuned EQS 53.
Priced some $100,000 south of the flagship Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4matic+, it still produces a respectable 265kW/800Nm. It is available in both a sedan and SUV format with the latter sporting seven seats across three rows.
