Wednesday 30 October 2024: The NRMA is thrilled to announce significant progress in the expansion of Australia’s National EV Backbone, a key initiative under the "Driving the Nation Fund." With the completion of the critical Adelaide-to-Tullamarine route, Australia’s electric vehicle charging network is set to expand further, providing drivers with greater access to charging infrastructure across the country.

Nell Payne, NRMA's Chief of Operations – Marine & Energy, remarked, “The National Electric Vehicle (EV) Backbone is a transformative project that will shape the future of transport in Australia. By creating a connected network, we are ensuring electric vehicles can travel far and wide, no matter where their journey leads.”

This landmark project is being delivered in partnership with the Australian Government’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), supported by a $39.3 million investment, matched by NRMA. The funding will enable the development of fast-charging sites along Australia’s national highways, ensuring that EV drivers can confidently travel long distances and through remote regions.

Part of the broader $500 million Driving the Nation Fund, this initiative aims to equip all of Australia’s National Highways with EV charging infrastructure by 2026. In addressing range anxiety the partnership is focused on eliminating charging black spots and enabling seamless long-distance travel, including key routes like Darwin to Perth and Broken Hill to Adelaide.

“I’m incredibly proud of the NRMA team and our partners who have worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life," added Payne. "Together, we are building the infrastructure Australia needs for a greener, more connected future."

Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen highlighted the importance of the initiative, noting that it improves consumer choice for cleaner, cheaper to run cars and ensures all Australians, regardless of their vehicle, can make long distance travel in rural, regional and remote areas of our country. By strategically placing chargers along major highways, the project is fostering the transition to clean energy, while simultaneously driving economic growth and job creation, particularly in regional areas.

The integration of these new charging stations into the National EV Backbone bridges essential gaps in Australia’s EV infrastructure, making sustainable travel a reality for all. “Our connected network ensures that EV drivers can travel the length and breadth of Australia with confidence, knowing they are supported by reliable charging infrastructure," Payne said. "This project is a game-changer for EV adoption across the nation.”

Key Advantages:

  • A Connected Network: The Adelaide to Tullamarine route creates a crucial link in Australia’s journey toward a fully interconnected and sustainable transportation system.
  • Strengthening Communities: These stations will enhance the vitality of regional and remote areas by enabling efficient EV travel, fostering both social and economic connections.
  • Rapid and Reliable Charging: With the capability to charge vehicles in about 30 minutes, drivers can get back on the road quickly and stay connected to the people and places that matter.
  • Commitment to Clean Energy: The integration of direct grid connections and innovative battery storage solutions reflects the NRMA’s dedication to renewable energy, aligning with Australia’s vision for a sustainable future.
