The NRMA is warning motorists to brace for high petrol prices this Easter holiday as Sydney races towards the high point of its cycle – with the current average price of 154.7 cents per litre (cpl) for regular unleaded – and climbing.
Prices in Sydney could continue to rise one or two cents before slowly falling after the Easter long weekend. Prices are now the highest they have been in six months.
The timing of the current price cycle couldn’t be worse for families preparing to go away for the Easter and ANZAC Day holiday period. In addition, world oil prices have been rising steadily throughout much of 2019, with prices up $US 26 to almost $US 82 a barrel.
The cheapest price for regular unleaded in Sydney is currently 131.7 cpl and the most expensive is 161.9 CPL. The average price of diesel is 148.7 cpl.
Sydney now has the highest average price for regular unleaded across NSW, with cheaper prices found across regional areas including:
- Maitland - 129.2 cpl
- Gunnedah - 135.1 cpl
- Goulburn - 136.6 cpl
- Albury - 137.0 cpl
- Newcastle - 137.7 cpl
NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury said families needed to brace for high petrol prices these holidays with average prices at Easter almost 40 cents per litre higher than Christmas.
“Sustained cuts to supply by OPEC, mayhem in Venezuela, US sanctions in Iran and Libya on the brink of civil war are all contributing to rising petrol prices here at home,” Mr Khoury said.
“Unfortunately Sydney’s price cycle has spiked just before the Easter break so it is important for families to do a bit of research before filling up. The myNRMA App can help families find local bargains, including a number of service stations in the low 130s.
“It is rare for prices outside of Sydney to be cheaper than they are in the city so it may also be worth waiting till you’re on the road to fill up. The myNRMA App can also help you find cheaper prices across regional NSW and along the coast.”
