The NRMA has committed $10 million to build one of Australia’s largest fast charging networks across NSW and the ACT.
NRMA General Manager Commercial Projects Elspeth Cronin said the Nabiac charger would be a game changer for electric vehicle motorists travelling to the mid north coast.
“The NRMA is serious about ensuring the next generation of mobility is accessible not just in city areas but right across our regions,” Ms Cronin said.
“The mid-north coast has long been one of our state’s most popular destinations for motoring tourists, and now we are ensuring those great touring routes are even more accessible for everyone.
“We know that one of the key reasons why the uptake of electric vehicle ownership has been relatively slow in Australia is because motorists are worried about where their next charge will be, particularly when they’re on the road in regional NSW.
“The opening of our first fast charger on the mid north coast means we have now opened the north coast region to EV motorists who want to keep moving and not wait hours for a charge. With NRMA fast chargers already in the Hunter and Newcastle, Nabiac is perfectly positioned to allow drivers to continue further, more quickly, up the coast.
“The NRMA is committed to delivering a solution to ‘range anxiety’, by installing an extensive network of electric vehicle fast chargers right across NSW and the ACT. Our aim is that 95 per cent of EV journeys are within 150 kilometres of one of our charging stations,” Ms Cronin said.
MidCoast Council Mayor David West said the charger would help support tourism.
“Facilitating EV motoring in our region is a natural fit for MidCoast Council, in keeping with our strong focus on environmental protection and conservation,” Cr West said.
“Tourism is vital to the MidCoast economy, and the Barrington Coast’s unique offering of nature-based experiences attracts visitors who are also interested in EV motoring.
“We expect this EV fast charging station to be in high demand by our visitors, and to be followed by more in our region in the near future,” Cr West said.
