The NRMA has today welcomed changes to the NSW Government cabinet and commended Minister Duncan Gay for the critical role he played in making WestConnex a reality for the people of Sydney and NSW.
Minister Gay's stewardship of record levels of investment under consecutive Premiers has been key to tackling Sydney's congestion challenges and improving roads across the state.
NRMA President Kyle Loades said Sydney's major road projects would change the way people got around forever and the leadership Minister Duncan Gay showed in making these projects a reality was worthy of recognition.
"WestConnex will improve the quality of life for countless families in Sydney's greater west and for that, and the work he has done in improving NSW's regional roads, Duncan Gay deserves considerable credit," Mr Loades said.
"The NRMA knows that for Sydney to reach its full potential as the world's best city we must offer the community a world-class road network, inter-connected and reliable public transport and all the transport benefits that will come from the shared mobility and driverless technology.
"Today, the NRMA welcomes Melinda Pavey to the crucial Roads portfolio and looks forward to working with her on improving the state's roads.
"We also welcome the special role of Minister Stuart Ayres, who is responsible for western Sydney and its most critical project, WestConnex.
"Mr Ayres has played a key role in turning the spotlight to tourism in western Sydney and we welcome Adam Marshall to the Tourism portfolio and look forward to working with him on raising the profile of tourism in regional NSW."
The NRMA is today also highlighting the critical importance of the Local Government and Planning portfolios in supporting the oncoming wave of mobility innovation.
"We thank Minister Rob Stokes for his work in the Planning portfolio and Paul Toole for his work in Local Government. We welcome Minister Anthony Roberts and Gabrielle Upton to these respective critical roles," Mr Loades said.
"Planning for the future growth of a city is not the same as planning for the growth of a smart city. There is no doubt innovation in mobility will have a dramatic impact on how residents of NSW get around across our cities and regional towns and communities.
"Car ownership is changing, creating new challenges in planning for parking, especially in inner urban areas. The arrival of the driverless car – and soon – will accelerate the need to respond.
"Access to data and information will be critical to the Innovation portfolio of Matt Kean and Minister Victor Dominello should be acknowledged for his leadership on fuel price transparency.
"Getting NSW ready to make the most of these opportunities will rely heavily on how we plan for growth and the NRMA looks forward to working with the Berejiklian-Barilaro Government to make sure our state is ready to benefit from this fast-paced change."
