The NRMA is urging motorists hitting the road this Easter long weekend to fill up in Sydney before they leave with petrol prices dropping to national lows.
Sydney petrol prices are currently almost 20 cents per litre (cpl) cheaper than other capital cities, with Sydney motorists paying on average 128.8 cpl at the bowser compared to 147.6 cpl in Brisbane and around 146 cpl in Perth, Adelaide, Canberra and Melbourne.
The average price of unleaded petrol in Sydney has fallen 6 cents in the past week. According to the My NRMA app the cheapest fuel in Sydney can be found at the Metro station at Revesby selling for 117.9 cpl.
The NRMA is expecting prices to fall to an average of 127 cpl before rising to a high of 147 cpl at the top of the next cycle over the coming weeks. NRMA Spokesperson Peter Khoury said motorists should fill up over the next few days as prices are expected to rise after the long weekend.
"According to the My NRMA app the gap between the cheapest and most expensive service stations in Sydney is 32 cpl and as prices are expected to rise after Easter that gap may well just widen – so it’s important to remain vigilant, do your research and fill up sooner rather than later,” Mr Khoury said.
“By using the My NRMA app and filling up at a low of 118 cpl rather than a high of 150 cpl the average family could save almost $20 dollars on a tank of petrol for a typical family sedan – more money to spend on the kids.”
According to NRMA’s Bowser Busters report the cheapest centres for regular unleaded outside Sydney last week were:
- Lithgow 129.1 cpl
- Gunnedah 130.9 cpl
- Wollongong 131.2 cpl
- Goulburn 131.4 cpl
“The NRMA is urging families to fill up before driving out of town, because you’re more likely to find a bargain in Sydney,” Mr Khoury said.
“However, for those traveling outside Sydney, use My NRMA app to make huge savings on fuel this Easter by finding the cheapest towns on your route. The gap between the cheapest and the most expensive service station can be significant.”
Currently projected prices at the lowest and highest point of the cycle are expected to be as follows:
- Regular unleaded 127 cpl to 147 cpl
- E10 – 125 cpl to 145 cpl
- Premium 95 – 142 cpl to 162 cpl
- Premium 98 – 148 cpl to 168 cpl
