Long weekend: Sydney prices on the rise

Thursday 23 January 2025: The Sydney price cycle is on the rise leading into the Australia Day long weekend after hitting a low price last week of 173.6 cents per litre for regular unleaded.

The average for regular unleaded price in Sydney is currently 184.1 cents per litre and is expected to rise to a high-point of just over $2 a litre. Families looking to head away for the long weekend are encouraged to fill up now.

Motorists in Brisbane and Melbourne are encouraged to fill up soon with prices slowly falling towards the bottom of the cycle. Across the country:

  • Adelaide 187.3 and falling from top of cycle
  • Brisbane 178.2 and falling to bottom of cycle
  • Canberra 196.7 and stable
  • Darwin 184.5 and stable
  • Hobart 191.8 and stable
  • Melbourne 176.7 and falling to bottom of cycle
  • Perth 197.9 and falling from top of cycle
  • Sydney 184.1 and rising from bottom of cycle

Across Sydney there remains bargains at the bowser with 43 per cent of service station selling regular unleaded for below 171 cents per litre, while 26.7 per cent of service stations are selling regular unleaded for more than $2 a litre.

NRMA Spokesperson, Peter Khoury, said while prices across Sydney have started to rise there are still savings to be found by shopping around.

“If you didn’t fill up last week while prices were at the bottom of the cycle now would be a good time to fill up as prices are only going to rise and rise quickly,” Mr Khoury said.
