Stay safe from
online scams

We’re always looking for ways to keep our members safe, and that includes when they’re online. First, it’s important to understand what a scam is.

A scam is when someone deceives you into providing personal or financial information so they can steal from you. With online scams continuing to rise and becoming more sophisticated, there are a few things you can keep an eye out for to stay protected.

Here are some handy tips from Scamwatch.

Stay scam aware
Be vigilant with unexpected emails, especially if they’re asking for personal details or other sensitive information. Scammers often use urgent or threatening language to prompt quick actions from people.

Look for inconsistent details
Check for typos, generic greetings and odd email addresses that don’t match the organisation’s typical format.

Verify before you act
If you receive a suspicious communication, always contact the organisation directly using details you’ve found yourself – not from the suspicious email or SMS. You can also check this list for phone numbers we use to call our members.

Look for secure websites
Make sure the website URL starts with “https” and includes a padlock icon in the address bar when entering personal details online.

Report a scam
If you think you’ve received a suspicious communication that’s impersonating the NRMA, you can tell us directly by emailing [email protected] or report it to Scamwatch.
