The park

Picturesque Port Campbell, located along the famous Great Ocean Road, is a two and a half hour drive from Melbourne. A mere 10 minutes from the 12 Apostles, the park occupies a quiet, grassy spot away from the main road and is just steps from both Campbells Creek and the sheltered Port Campbell foreshore. It’s an ideal location for families as there are free kids’ activities during the school holidays, a TV and games room, plus a playground and skate park nearby. The creek and Port Campbell Harbour both offer excellent fishing, while Two Mile Bay east of town is revered by surfers for having some of Australia’s best big breaks.

The accommodation

The holiday park is cleverly arranged around a bend in Campbells Creek to create a sense of serenity and space. All of the camp sites are powered, and many face directly on to the creek. The one bedroom cabins have plenty of room to move and sleep up to five – upgrade to a creekside cabin for water views and greater peace and quiet. Or make yourself at home in a modern two bedroom creekside villa, which also sleeps up to five. There are also comfortable studios that sleep two. All studios, cabins and villas are decked out with air conditioning, kitchen facilities and TVs with DVD players. Plus, all cabins and villas feature verandahs with outdoor dining furniture, and the creekside villas have their own barbecues.

The neighbourhood

Of course, no trip to Port Campbell is complete without viewing the majestic 12 Apostles. To get up close, consider a tour with Port Campbell Boat Charters, who can also take you to hidden locales along the coastline. And while you’re in the area, be sure to check out other coastal highlights, including the incredibly atmospheric Loch Ard Gorge, the dramatic Gibson Steps and stately London Bridge (also known as London Arch). Back in town, head to Port Campbell Hotel for upscale pub meals made with locally caught seafood and other local produce, or try 12 Rocks Beach Bar for craft beers, strong coffee and homemade cakes served with locally made Timboon Fine Ice Cream. Nico’s Pizza and Pasta is a local institution, Waves offers hearty meals with Asian flair and Forage on the Foreshore should be your choice for a quick coffee and a selection of local goods. Still hungry? Consider the self guided 12 Apostles Gourmet Trail for even more great produce.
